1. CONTEXT: What were the circumstances that framed the meaning and process of this project?
  • The way teenagers are viewed in society, especially the minority. The stereotypes and how the media presents them.

2. CONTENT: What was the issue, need, idea or opportunity addressed by this project?
  • Their idea was to have high school students have their own conversations about issues they face constantly and what their perspective is about it.

3: FORM: What is the medium that was used to address or embody the content?
  • They parked cars on a rooftop and asked the high school students to have their conversations inside the cars in groups.

4. STAKEHOLDERS: Which are the groups or individuals that were invested in the project?
  • The artists: Suzanne Lacy and Chris Johnson. As well as teachers and other artists that were helping the students with the project.

5. AUDIENCE: For whom was this project conceived?
  • I believe this project was targeted at adults and those who have a certain image about the minority communities, specifically teenagers.

6. ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES: How were the stakeholders, audiences, and others engaged/connected to the project?
  • They were sharing their stories and giving their perspective on certain topics that they deal with on a daily basis. The audience got to listen to these conversations and it made them think about the world/society they live in.

7. GOAL: What are this project's objectives?
  • To reach out to the adults and for them to see that teenage minorities aren’t all criminals or drop-outs and that they also have goals and dreams they want to accomplish.

8. VALUES: What were the project's guiding values or core beliefs? How were they expressed in the process?
  • I believe the project’s core beliefs were that it doesn’t matter what your background or skin color is, you shouldn't just assume. Also, the way teenagers are viewed in the media isn’t who they really are.

9. RESOURCES: What tangible and intangible resources were used to pursue the project's goals?
  • A tangible resource would be the activity that the teacher gave her students to do; in which they created two different perspectives of themselves. Another one would be using the student who got pregnant at the age of 16 as a resource.

10: OUTCOMES: What were the results of this project?

  • It impacted the adults who were there. They got to be a part of conversations that are hard to talk about and just being listeners and not actually interacting with the students. It opened their minds in regards to what teenagers really do go through and how it is so easy to judge someone by their appearance or race.

Assignment: Aesthetic Evangelists - Due 1/30    Three key ideas in the text that resonate with me: The first is the idea of the "new public art," or what we would call "community engaged art." The article discusses the transition from art displayed in public sites to community based projects that have the goal of collaboration and focus more on the process than the end result/outcome. This intrigues me because before this class I was honestly very unaware of this form of art-making and its growing prevalence. Another idea that resonates with me is when the author talked about community based public art of today drawing on the urban reform rhetoric of the past both consciously and subconsciously. This stood out because it's an old adage that history repeats itself and I think it's interesting that the times we live in now call for a callback to this type of work and a more curious examination of what this can do for people and their communities.
