Kazmiera Tarshis: The Transborder Immigrant Tool


1. CONTEXT: This project was created as a way to help people crossing the border between mexico and the U.S. 
2. CONTENT: It provided help and safety for immigrants during a dangerous crossing to try and help them and to provide poetry as a means of directions. 
3: FORM: A mobile- phone technology.
4. STAKEHOLDERS: Ricardo Dominguez, a professor at UCSD, the artists of EDT/ b.a.n.g lab, and the people needing this information as they cross the border. 
5. AUDIENCE: This was created for immigrants crossing the border.
6. ENGAGEMENT STRATEGIES: The project was a necessity for people crossing the border, it brought together the b.a.n.g lab artists and Water Station inc and Border Angels to work together.
7. GOAL: The objective was to provide a guide to people crossing the border. 
8. VALUES: They wanted to create a global poetic system, as opposed to a global positioning system in order to help people. 
9. RESOURCES: They had to create technology to support thos effort, and they partnered with other organiations to be able to lead people to water and sanctuary.
10: OUTCOMES: Even though they were investigated by the FBI and UCSD, they were able to create poetry that made a difference in people's lives and did something for a communtiy with art.

What a Riot - Bri Pattillo

   I like the Theater of the Oppressed methodology of the Joker. It sort of reminded me of El Pachuco in “Zoot Suit”, like this narrator commenting on all the action. I thought the Joker methodology was a good way to introduce a Theater of the Oppressed tactic into the piece. A lot of the Theater of the Oppressed options that we read about last week have an element of questioning within in them, but I think the Joker was a good one to use with young people. It was nice and cool that she was able to include the students’ actual questions into the play.     I did think her approach was rather problematic. She highlighted the problem herself and posed the question, “To whom and to what is the author beholden when writing a play for a specified population that has been invited to contribute to the playwriting process?” My problem was her answer, when she said that the students didn’t understand all of the references or language in the play.
